Sommer has been a nurse for nearly 23 years. Most of her nursing career has been spent in emergency medicine and critical care. Her passion for cardiovascular care lead her to work in the Cardiac Cath lab before becoming the Comprehensive Cardiovascular Coordinator at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center for eight years. During that 8 years Sommer was part of the caregiver side, as well as the patient experience. In 2019, Sommer experienced her first heart attack due to a spontaneous coronary artery dissection. Again in November 2023, Sommer experienced another heart attack due to a spontaneous coronary artery dissection, which lead to a cardiac arrest. This experience has given Sommer a personal reason to ensure everyone is aware of early symptom recognition, the importance of early EMS activation & hands only CPR.
